Relieve Sciatica I’m going to share with you some of my favorite exercises to relieve sciatica related pain in the lower back, buttocks, legs and feet. This can be a very painful condition that seems to haunt people with pain no matter what they do. The great thing is there are easy ways to relieve the pain.

Sciatica is a type of symptom that is the result of pain in the lower back area, typically. This is caused by a compression, or irritation of a nerve root in the back. Along with pain, this can cause numbness, weak muscles, and even difficulty moving/controlling your legs.

One of the most common causes of sciatica is a disc in your vertebrae is compressed right on a nerve root which causes this pain. Typically this happens while you rotate your back because the discs aren’t the best at dealing with a turning compression. Also, your disks can lose the liquid inside which will have your nerve roots compressed on most of the time.

muscle gets tenseThere other causes which include when you spinal canal ends up narrowing and puts pressure on the nerves. 15% of people suffer from piriformis syndrome. This is where a nerve runs through the middle a muscle, instead of underneath it. When the , the nerve is compressed and you will feel pain.

There are solutions for this and I have some exercises to relieve sciatica. Lie down on a flat surface and lift your knees up to your chest. Huge them and pull them as close as you can to your chest. Hold that position. What you’re doing is stretching the lower back. We rarely ever stretch our lower back, so that is why this exercises a little different. Since your back is being stretched out, it will relieve any tense muscles, it’ll create more space, so nerves aren’t being compressed or irritated.

Sciatic Nerve Pain

Sciatic Nerve Pain The pain known as sciatica (sometimes misspelled as "syatica" or "psyatica") is caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve (one on each side). The symptoms of sciatica usually start in the buttock and may extend partially or all the way down the leg. The sciatic nerves are each formed by nerve roots from the lower lumbar and sacral parts of the spinal cord. The individual nerve roots come together in the lower pelvis to form the sciatic nerves. Each sciatic nerve then runs from the pelvis down the back of each leg. The sciatic nerve splits into two parts below the knee and the two halves run down the back of the lower leg to the foot.

While there are several possible causes of sciatica, by far the most common source of sciatic nerve irritation is a bulging or herniated disc in the lower lumbar spine. A damaged disc may bulge into the opening where one of the nerve roots exits the spine on it’s way to join other nerve roots as part of the sciatic nerve. The bulging disc may create direct nerve pressure, and/or may trigger inflammation and swelling, which can also cause pressure on the nerve. When this occurs, pain and other symptoms may be felt part along the course of the sciatic nerve, starting in the buttock area and possibly running down the leg, sometimes all the way to the foot.disc bulges

Besides disc bulges, spinal openings for nerves may be narrowed by bone spurs or other bone formations related to spinal degeneration. In some cases, sciatica may result from direct trauma to the nerve after it exits the pelvis, such as what can happen if there is a direct impact or hard pressure applied in the lower buttock region. Rare sources of sciatica can include spinal tumors, which can compress sciatic nerve roots as they exit the spine. Another rare cause of sciatica is a cyst or tumor that compresses the sciatic nerve in the hip or knee area.

Not every buttock or leg pain that people think is sciatica is acutually sciatica. True sciatica (sciatic nerve irritation) is usually felt mostly in the back of the leg (not the front or side of the leg). The symptoms of true sciatica can take different forms and may be descibed as tingling, burning, stabbing, aching, electric shock, numbness, or heaviness. But even if symptoms seem like sciatica, they are not always due to actual irritation of the sciatic nerve.

One common condition that closely mimics sciatica is caused by knots of contraction called trigger points in a muscle called the piriformis. The piriformis muscles are located on either side of the lower buttock area, running from the upper thigh bone to the edge of the sacrum (the triangular pelvic bone that is at the base of the spine).

In addition to causing symptoms that mimic sciatica, tightness in the piriformis muscle may also cause true sciatic irritation, because the sciatic nerve actually runs through the center of the piriformis muscle in some people, and can be compressed by excessive muscle contraction.

Trigger points in other muscles in the buttocks and upper thigh can cause referred pain in the side of the leg that may be mistaken for sciatica as well. It should be kept in mind that true sciatica and piriformis syndrome are associated with symptoms that are primarily felt in the back of the leg. If symptoms are in the front or side of the leg, there’s a good chance that the problem is not sciatica.

Treatment of sciatica is usually associated with treating a bulging disc. The first line of treatment is usually an attempt to reduce inflammation to reduce pressure on the nerve bymeans of oral medications. For more powerful anti-inflammatory effects, spinal injections with steroids like cortisone may be used. A variety of other types of treatment may also be used, such as physical therapy, massage, chiropractic or osteopathic spinal manipulation, acupuncture, or one of the newest forms of treatment, spinal decompression. In some situations, surgery may be recommended as a last resort.

In the majority of cases, an episode of sciatica will resolve even without any treatment within a period of several weeks, but due to the intensity of pain, most patients will not wait for it to go away on its own and seek out treatment. Unfortunately, due to misconceptions by doctors and patients alike regarding the nature of sciatica, the necessary steps to prevent a return of sciatica are usually not taken. So, even though most people do recover from a bout of sciatica, nearly all will eventually have problems again at some point. Even sciatica sufferers initially treated successfully with surgery will often have future problems with sciatica.

The good news is that with awareness of how to manage sciatica and a little bit of effort dedicated to prevention, most people can avoid ongoing long-term sciatica problems. The challenge is simply to making people aware of the necessity of a "management" versus "cure" approach to sciatica and getting them to follow-through with preventive exercises and other self-care techniques.

I’m going to share with you some of the sciatica relief methods hat can help reduce and eliminate back pain. Suffering from back pain can be one of the worst things because your back is the core of everything you do. If you go for a walk, it’s back pain. If you look left or right, it’s back pain. Structural Integration: This is a method I think is way to complex to be a solution. This is where they actually integrate a structure like metal into your back to take support of nerves. I think this is dangerous and not very smart.

Typically when you suffer from sciatica, you’re going to have some nerve root in your lower back being compressed or irritated. Surgery goes in and removes this nerve. For me, that seems dangerous because many of these nerves are right around the spinal area and medial science isn’t that great when it comes to dealing with the spin. They might be able to get rid of the back pain, but you might not walk again. I think the risks outweigh the benefitsOsteopathy.
Osteopathy: This is a little more controversial, but the idea is that you can treat the bodies problems through the musculoskeletal system. This is what I’ll describe as "New Age". There is really no science that backs up the claims and a lot of it is believed to be a placebo effect.

One of the best sciatica relief methods is simple stretches and exercises you can do from home. By doing stretches in the morning, you can have all day relief from back pain, without having to spend money on pain killers or any other form of treatment that doesn’t solve the problem.

Low Back Pain & Sciatica - The Role Of The Piriformis Muscle

Low back Pain & Sciatica can be very painful conditions, where pain is felt either in the low back & / or passing down the leg from either the low back or buttock region. There are several reasons as to why you may suffer with Low Back Pain or Sciatica, but a tight Piriformis muscle is a relatively common cause.

Deep within the buttock region is where the Piriformis muscle can be found. It is actually attached to the Sacrum, and then travels outwards where it attaches to the outside of the hip. As the Sciatic Neve passes through the buttock area, it travels through, or underneath, the Piriformis muscle.

A tight Piriformis muscle will place increased stress upon the Sciatic Nerve as it passes through or underneath it, potentially aggravating the Sciatic Nerve and causing pain. On the other hand, as far as Low Back Pain is concerened, it is the constant ‘tugging’ upon the Sacrum, caused by the tight Piriformis muscle, which is the problem.

The Sacrum forms half of the Sacro-Iliac joint (Sacro referring to the Sacrum and Iliac referring to a specific part of the pelvis) and if the sacrum is being pulled on too much, there will be increased stresses placed across the Sacro-Iliac joint, which itself can ultimately lead to pain.

If you find that your Low Back Pain begins not in the lower back itself, but rather a little further down (but above the buttock region), there is a reasonable chance it is Sacro-Iliac pain your are suffering with. Some people often say to me it feels as if the pain is coming from an area below their back where there are a ‘couple of dimples’. This is in the area of the Sacro-Iliac joint and if you feel the same, it maybe this joint which is the source of your pain.

Aggravation to the Sciatic Nerve, anywhere along its length, can result in Sciatica. However, if a tight Piriformis muscle is the cause of your pain, the chances are the ‘focus’ of your pain is going to begin in the buttock region. If this is the case, the Piriformis muscle will need to be stretched.

There are several ways of stretching the Piriformis muscle, all of which would are best described with the use of a diagram. There is a link at the bottom of this article which will show you some Piriformis stretches.

Massage is an excellent way of loosening up this muscle, and by using a small ball (maybe a tennis ball or something similar) this is something you can try yourself:

Lie yourself on your back with your knees bent. Place the ball approximately in the middle of buttock on the side which needs to be massaged (this is approximately where the Piriformis muscle is). From there, gently ‘roll’ the ball by moving / rotating your buttock, so that the ball gently massages the area underneath.

Due to the close proximity of the Sciatic Nerve to the Piriformis muscle, it is important you take care while performing this exercise. If you are too aggressive, you may simpy end up aggravating the Sciatic Nerve and therefore making your pain worse.

If it does, this is nothing to worry about. However, it is your body’s way of telling you it is not ready for that kind of treatment yet. Have a rest for a day or two and then try again, only being a little gentler next time!

Exercises such as stretching and massage are an excellent way of loosening up a tight Piriformis muscle. Consequently, if it is tightness in this muscle which is responsible for your pain, your pain should soon begin to resolve itself.
